We all have different, yet equally valuable stories which can be used to share one key message: mental health is also health and we must make it a priority!

Mental Health Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness on mental health and its importance; mental health is something we can protect, not just something we can neglect. Talking openly about mental health can help reduce the stigmas and misconceptions around mental health disorders, and encourage individuals and families who may be facing challenges to seek help and find a positive support network. It is important for caregivers, friends, and loved ones to understand the impacts that mental health can have on daily life. Mental Health Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to educate ourselves on the realities of living with a mental health disorder, encourages individuals to seek support, and presents an opportunity to communities to come together and advocate for better resources.

Whether it is you or a loved one who may be struggling through a mental illness, it is important to recognize the signs. Some symptoms of developing a mental illness may include: Changes in mood or emotions; Behavioral changes, i.e., antisocial behavior, isolation; Changes in eating and/or sleeping patterns; Drastic changes in weight; Constant sadness or feelings of hopelessness; Difficulty interacting and low energy levels. While these are more common signs of mental illness, they may present itself differently for every individual. It is essential to take steps to maintain your mental health to ensure you are managing your well-being.

What are some ways that I can maintain my mental health and well-being?
  1. Plan and Prioritize Your Well-Being
Maintain your focus on one thing at a time. Remain calm, plan ahead, set priorities, action steps, reminders, and celebrate your progress.

  2. Focus on Your Nutrition
Eating healthy foods is crucial for your mental health. Eat nutritious, well balanced meals and drink plenty of water throughout your day.

  3. Connect
Join a club, group, or participate in any activity that allows you to build strong social connections!

  4. Switch Off
Try to electronically disconnect. Turn off the TV, games, and your phone, even if it is just for 5-10 minutes a day. Instead, get some fresh air, take a walk outside, read a book

  5. Get Moving
Physical activity is not only good for your physical health, but also your mental health! It can help with your mood and improve your overall functioning.

  6. Improve Your Sleeping Habits
Poor sleeping habits and/or a lack of 8 hours of sleep can cause stress and exhaustion. Prioritizing your sleep is crucial for improved functioning. So, turn off the TV at least 30 minutes before bed and see the difference!

  7. Tune in
Listening to music for fun can help you relax and can improve creativity, productivity and focus.

  8. Find the Time
Make the time to connect with your friends and loved ones in person. We all need connection.

  9. Reach Out
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and you are unable to cope, seek support.

When an individual reaches out to seek help, it can feel like the beginning of a journey towards mental wellness and healing However, they may have had to take several steps just to get in the door. We understand that taking the steps towards seeking help can be a challenging one.

How can we collectively work towards raising mental health awareness and supporting our community members?
  1. Openly participate in conversations about mental health
Experiencing mental health challenges can be extremely difficult and isolating. Often, individuals feel they must hide their  symptoms or deny their struggles. Sharing your own experiences with friends and family members can encourage them to ask questions and perhaps speak up about their own struggles.

  2. Educate yourself and others on the signs and symptoms of mental health disorders
Understanding and communicating the causes, symptoms, and treatments available for individuals who may be facing anxiety, depression, and other forms of mental health illnesses can help to reduce misconceptions and allow for more supportive discussion to take place.

  1. Practice compassion and kindness towards others
Showing individuals respect and acceptance removes a significant barrier to successfully coping with their illness. Having people see you as an individual and not as your illness can make the biggest difference for someone who is struggling with their mental health.

While facing mental health challenges can make life more difficult, it does not have to stop you from living a fulfilling life. It does not define you. You do not have to struggle in silence.

Just remember, Bloom Well Therapy is here for you, whenever you are ready.
